Begitu mendengar tentang Gerakan 30 September 1965 dari siaran berita RRI keesokan harinya pukul 07.00, Menteri Panglima Angkatan Udara Marsekal Omar Dani secara tergesa-gesa menulis perintah harian. Di kemudian hari, surat berisi empat poin itu menjadi persoalan yang mengantarnya ke bui selama hampir 30 tahun.
Mahkamah Militer Luar Biasa menghukum mati Omar Dani pada 25 Desember 1966 karena dianggap terlibat G30S. Eksekusi tak kunjung dilakukan karena hukuman kemudian diubah menjadi penjara seumur hidup. Omar Dani baru keluar dari penjara Cipinang pada 16 Agustus 1995.
Bagi Mayjen Soeharto, yang saat itu mengendalikan Angkatan Darat, dosa Omar dan TNI-AU tak cuma itu. Mereka juga terlibat jauh dalam Gerakan 30S dan bermain mata dengan PKI. Buktinya?
"Banyak sukarelawan dari Pemuda Rakyat (yang berafiliasi ke Partai Komunis Indonesia) yang dilatih kemiliteran di wilayah sekitar Pangkalan Udara Halim. Mereka memiliki senjata api seperti yang dimiliki AU," kata Soeharto saat menghadap Presiden Sukarno di Istana Bogor beberapa waktu setelah Gerakan 30 September terjadi.
Omar Dani yang juga turut dipanggil Presiden Sukarno menyergah paparan Soeharto. Mnurut dia, para sukarelawan yang disebut Soeharto berlatih di Lubang Buaya tak lain adalah mereka yang siap dikirim dalam rangka konfrontasi (dengan Malaysia). Terkait senjata, semua angkatan memiliki senjata yang sama dengan angkatan lain dan tercatat. "Kalaupun yang tak digunakan, semua tersimpan di gudang," tandasnya.
Menyimak pembelaan Omar Dani, Soeharto lalu meminta izin Presiden Sukarno mengambil sesuatu. Dia memperlihatkan senapan tempur Chung buatan RRC yang masih terbungkus. "Senjata ini ditemukan di sekitar Lubang Buaya," ujar Soeharto.
Komodor Leo Wattimena, yang mendampingi Omar Dani, menghela napas panjang. "Memang ini senjata Angkatan Udara, Pak. Mereka mencurinya dari gudang kami. Kami akan menelitinya lebih lanjut," kata dia kepada Presiden.
Adegan percakapan itu bisa disimak dalam film 'Pengkhianatan G30S/PKI' yang tersebar di YouTube, pada durasi 3.10.33-3.12.29. Sebuah adegan yang kemudian dianggap menyudutkan TNI-AU sebagai terlibat dalam Gerakan 30 September.
Selama Orde Baru, TNI-AU kemudian seperti terkucil dan sekadar pelengkap dalam sistem pertahanan RI. Padahal sebelumnya, kekuatan TNI-AU termasuk yang disegani di Asia karena memiliki peralatan udara tercanggih dari Uni Soviet.
"Seluruh pesawat canggih AURI buatan Uni Soviet, grounded atas permintaan Amerika. Selanjutnya AURI diberi pesawat jet tempur kuno jenis F-86 Sabre yang hanya sekelas UTI MiG-15," tulis biografi 'Suryadi Suryadarma Bapak Angkatan Udara'.
Hal yang sama, tulis buku terbitan Kompas 2017 itu, terjadi pada Angkatan Laut, yang mengalami kemunduran karena kapal penjelajah RI Irian ditenggelamkan di Laut Cina Selatan.
Setelah Soeharto lengser, Omar Dani dan sejumlah pensiunan TNI-AU berani buka suara. Mereka yang selama lebih dari 30 tahun bungkam dan seolah menerima takdir merilis semacam buku putih: 'Menyingkap Kabut Halim 1965'. Ditulis wartawan senior Aristides Katoppo, lewat buku ini mereka memberikan klarifikasi terhadap tuduhan yang pernah dilontarkan Soeharto.
Soal Lubang Buaya, rupanya ini merujuk dua tempat dengan nama yang sama. Di lingkungan Pangkalan Udara Halim memang ada lokasi bernama Lubang Buaya sebagai tempat dropping zone. Sedangkan yang ditudingkan sebagai basis pelatihan anggota PKI adalah desa di Pondok Gede, yang jaraknya 3,5 kilometer dari Halim. "Soal senjata yang ditemukan di Lubang Buaya, ternyata tidak hanya dari AURI, tapi ada yang berasal dari TNI AL, Kepolisian, bahkan TNI AD sendiri."
Di Halim, tulis buku ini, setelah G30S, tak pernah berkumpul Presiden Sukarno, tokoh PKI DN Aidit dan Sjam Kamaruzaman, Brigadir Jenderal Soeprapto, serta Kolonel Latief. "Yang ada hanya Presiden yang tengah diamankan, didampingi Omar Dani. Jadi tak benar Halim adalah pusat gerakan."
