Kepala Hak Asasi Manusia Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa (PBB), Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, mengatakan pemerintah Myanmar benar-benar tengah melakukan pembersihan etnis terhadap warga Muslim Rohingya di Negara Bagian Rakhine.
Tak hanya itu, al-Hussein juga menyatakan perlakuan pemerintah Myanmar terhadap kaum minoritas itu benar-benar telah melanggar hukum internasional.
"Terjadi pembunuhan di luar hukum yang ekstrem dan kekejaman yang konsisten, seolah pemerintah menggunakan cara ini untuk memindahkan secara paksa sejumlah besar orang agar tidak lagi kembali ke tempat asalnya," kata al-Hussein di hadapan Dewan HAM PBB di Jenewa, seperti dilansir dari laman New York Times, Selasa (12/9).
"Situasi ini merupakan contoh nyata tentang pembersihan etnis," tambahnya.
Seperti diketahui, lebih dari 300.ooo orang telah melarikan diri dari Myanmar ke Bangladesh sejak 25 Agustus lalu untuk mencari perlindungan dari serangan yang terus dikerahkan oleh militer Myanmar terhadap kaum Rohingya maupun desa mereka.
Sejak saat itu, para pengungsi Rohingya memberi kesaksian terhadap apa-apa yang telah menimpa mereka kepada wartawan dan kelompok hak asasi manusia. Mereka mengaku tentara Myanmar dan penduduk setempat telah membakar rumah-rumah mereka hingga rata dengan tanah dan membunuh warga Rohingya termasuk wanita dan anak-anak.
Meski demikian, pejabat di Myanmar membantah dengan mengatakan warga Muslim Rohingya telah membakar rumah beserta desa mereka sendiri.
"Klaim itu merupakan penyangkalan atas kenyataan yang sebenarnya terjadi di sana," tegas al-Hussein.
Komentar al-Hussein ini menambah daftar kritik di mata internasional terhadap krisis kemanusiaan di Negara Bagian Rakhine yang dilakukan militer Myanmar. Pemimpin negara Aung San Suu Kyi juga menerima kritikan serupa karena terus-terusan bungkam tanpa mengambil tindakan apapun untuk menghentikan kekejaman militernya
