Penghargaan ini merupakan penghargaan pertama yang pernah diberikan Pemerintah Prancis di bidang operasi kerja sama militer di bawah bendera Pasukan Perdamaian PBB.
Letkol Marinir Didiet Hendra Wijaya menerima medali kehormatan atas jasanya saat menjabat sebagai Military Staff Operation G3 pada Satgas PBB Minusca (United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic) pada tahun 2015-2016.
Ketika menjabat sebagai perwira staf operasi di sektor Timur dan Barat, Letkol Marinir Didiet telah berhasil mengoordinasikan secara sinergis pergerakan manuver di lapangan antara pasukan Uni-Afrika, pasukan PBB dan Pasukan Khusus Pemerintah Prancis, Sangaris.
Operasi pemulihan keamanan dengan sandi "Big Boumo Operation" yang menggabungkan seluruh unsur kekuatan pasukan perdamaian telah berhasil menangkap para pemimpin gerombolan Seleka dan Anti Balaka yang bertikai, yang menewaskan lebih dari 300 orang masyarakat sipil.
Gerombolan pemberontak yang mengkudeta dan menguasai pemerintahan lokal di kota Bria dapat dilumpuhkan dan otoritas Pemerintah Central Afrika dapat dikembalikan sehingga situasi dapat terkendali dan jatuhnya korban masyarakat sipil Central Africa dapat ditekan.
Kisah sukses ini mengingatkan pada beberapa kesuksesan Pasukan Garuda lain di medan tugas. Salah satunya saat Kontingen Garuda III menangkap 3.000 gerilyawan di Kongo.
Ceritanya, Desember 1962 di Kongo sedang bergolak. Kontingen Garuda III (Konga III) di bawah pimpinan Kolonel Kemal Idris berangkat sebagai pasukan perdamaian di bawah UNOC (United Nations Operation in the Congo).
Suatu hari, terjadi serangan yang dilakukan 2.000 gerilyawan Kongo ke markas Pasukan Garuda. Saat itu markas hanya dipertahankan 300 tentara. Setelah baku tembak berjam-jam, gerilyawan dapat dipukul mundur. Untungnya tak ada korban di pihak Indonesia.
Serangan balasan pun segera dirancang untuk menangkap para pemberontak. Letjen Kemal Idris menceritakan hal ini dalam buku biografi, Kemal Idris, bertarung dalam revolusi terbitas Sinar Harapan.
"Kami melakukan penyerangan di malam hari dengan kapal yang digelapkan di atas danau Tanganyika, tidak berapa jauh dari daerah Albertville. Pasukan kami yang berkekuatan 30 orang menyamar sebagai hantu," beber Kemal Idris.
Kemal tahu 3.000 pemberontak itu sangat percaya takhayul. Mereka takut pada hantu spritesses yang digambarkan berwarna putih dan melayang-layang di waktu malam. Maka 30 anggota pasukan garuda itu berpakaian jubah putih dan segera menyerang.
"Melihat sosok-sosok putih bergerak-gerak, semangat mereka hilang sama sekali dan segera menyerah," kata Kemal.
Dalam operasi kilat itu, ribuan gerilyawan Kongo ditangkap. Senjata-senjata mereka yang ternyata lumayan canggih disita. Dalam peristiwa itu hanya seorang prajurit TNI yang cidera. Salah seorang gerilyawan yang panik saat digerebek, melemparkan ayam yang tengah dibakarnya pada tentara kita.
"Sejak itu, anggota Garuda III di kenal oleh orang-orang Kongo dengan julukan Les Spiritesses, pasukan yang berperang dengan cara yang tidak biasa dilakukan orang," kata Kemal bangga.
Letnan Jenderal Kadebe Ngeso dari Ethopia mengaku bangga atas keberhasilan pasukan Indonesia menangkap 3.000 lainnya tanpa jatuh korban. Namun dia pun meminta ke depan cara-cara unik seperti itu tidak dilakukan. Karena risiko terlalu besar dan sangat membahayakan.
