Ternyata Thomas terkena cacar air . Stuart dan Liz yang pernah merawat putra pertamanya saat terkena cacar air pun tidak khawatir. Apalagi keduanya memang punya gejala yang sama: temperatur tinggi, kehilangan nafsu makan dan merasa lelah.
"Saya dan istro saya tetap kerja seperti biasa sementara Thomas tinggal bersama keluarga," kisah Stuart, dikutip dari Metro, Senin (18/9/2017).
Sepulang kerja, Stuart menjemput anaknya dan membawanya pulang ke rumah. Kala itu, Thomas masih demam tapi mau makan anggur dan duduk. Stuart pun menganggap anaknya sudah membaik. Tak disangka, perkiraannya salah.
Agar Thomas lebih nyaman, Stuart mengganti baju anaknya dengan kaos dan celana pendek. Thomas lantas didudukkan di sofa, sementara dirinya menghangatkan susu.
"Ketika saya kembali, Thomas nggak terlalu merespons. Cuma waktu itu saya pikir dia ketiduran," sambung Stuart.
Stuart kemudian menaruh botol berisi susu ke tangan anaknya. Tapi si kecil tidak berusaha untuk menggenggam botol itu. Stuart lantas mendudukkan si kecil, tapi Thomas malah jatuh ke samping.
"Saya menyadari ada sesuatu yang nggak beres. Saya menelepon seorang anggota keluarga yang terlatih secara medis, lalu menelepon ambulans," sambungnya.
Saat itu, operator memintanya membaringkan Thomas di lantai dan memeriksa saluran napas. Stuart mendapati Thomas masih bernapas, tapi sangat dangkal.
"Ini sangat menakutkan bagi saya karena saya sendirian di rumah bersama Thomas," lanjutnya.
Saat petugas medis tiba, Thomas mengalami serangan jantung sehingga dilarikan ke rumah sakit. Petugas berusaha keras menyelamatkan Thomas. Tapi sayang, nyawa balita itu tidak tertolong.
Dari laporan toksikologi, Stuart dan istrinya baru tahu bahwa Thomas mengalami infeksi invasif Strep A yang memicu sepsis. Laporan tersebut menggarisbawahi penyebabnya adalah cacar air yang menutupi gejala infeksi.
"Kematian karena sepsis yang terkait cacar air sangat jarang terjadi. Tapi kami bersemangat menyebarkan kesadaran tentang gejala sepsis," imbuh Stuart.
Dikutip dari Mirror, jika anak tidak sehat dengan demam (lenih dari 38,5 derajat Celcius) atau suhu yang sangat rendah (kurang dari 35 derajat Celcius) dalam 24 jam terakhir, sebaiknya diperhatikan apakah napasnya cepat (lebih tinggi dari 20 napas dalam semenit), juga denyut jantungnya cukup cepat (lebih tinggi dari 90 dalam semenit).
Selain itu, perlu diperhatikan juga apakah anak sangat lesu sehingga sulit untuk bangun, juga ada ruam yang tidak pudar saat dipencet, maka bisa jadi ada gejala sepsis. Perhatikan pula jika anak di bawah lima tahun memiliki gejala tambahan tidak mau makan, muntah berulang kali, dan popok atau celana dalamnya tidak basah dalam 12 jam.
